What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was teaching college when one of my students asked if I was a native. Shocked I asked him why he thought I might be aboriginal. "The way your hair is going grey is called Eagle Feathers."
This began a quest for knowledge about my roots. It is a long story but the short version is that I found out that my great great grandmother had left her reserve to live with my great great grandfather and they raised 6 children.
I have often wondered what my life might have been like if she had not left the reserve. This novel is the result of those many musings.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My heroine, Rosa, is in the position I find myself. Native blood flowing in my veins, but absolutely no knowledge about native culture. She is a medical doctor with a Phd in microbiology, doing research in Canada’s level 4 lab.
I wanted her to have a native friend, a colleague, and thus developed Laura Lightfoot, a top researcher at the CDC in the U.S.
They both are dedicated scientists, aware that their best before date for babies is rapidly approaching. So, I introduced John, a cop and Rosa’s neighbour. For Laura I created Major General Johansen of the Norwegian Airforce.
Rosa’s life is saved by Sam Stormcloud from her local reserve. He plays a critical role in introducing her to her genetic culture, about which she knows nothing. Sam plays another critical role but you will have to listen to the book to find out what that is.
