What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
When our son started Early Intervention and was diagnosed with autism, he began making progress and reaching his goals. I was determined to learn as much as I could and become the best advocate for him. I would document his journey in binders of information and one day found myself so grateful for our experience and his growth that I decided to share with others.
A Warm Welcome from the Author …
Over the years, parents have regularly reached out or were referred to me through friends for advice regarding their newly diagnosed child with autism. Hearing the words “autism diagnosis” from a doctor can be intimidating and parents are often unsure of where to turn or what to do. When our son was diagnosed at 22 months old, I began to gather information and organize it into multiple binders. For the past 12 years I have combined it all here to share with you and your family. My husband and I haven’t had all the answers along the way, but we’ve always had hope. This book has been a labor of love for me. Our son Dylan is now 14 and doing amazing things that we were once told were never in his reach. This book was written with hopes to provide support, tips and strategies for newly diagnosed parents of children with autism.
I am not a (professional) special education teacher or advocate or even a therapist, I’m a devoted Mom, wanting to share the resources, ideas and suggestions that have helped us to benefit our son during the earlier years.
This book is designed to help you with skills, practices, valuable information and insight so you feel supported in your personal journey with your child. I remember the panic, fears, denial, and the distress I felt when our son was diagnosed. I want you to feel supported. By journaling our experience, exploring and reflecting on the day to day changes over the years, my goal is to empower you and your family through this. You are not alone, we are a community and a family.
In this book, you will read about our personal journey, find learning opportunities to implement into your daily lives and feel connected. I decided to write this book because when our son was toddler, and we were new parents, we didn’t know where to turn or what to do. But, what I did know is that I had tremendous gratitude for the professionals that taught us so much by supporting our family with their expert knowledge. Even then, 12 years ago, I knew I needed to take the time to put the learning tools into a book to share with others who may be experiencing the same thing with their child. Some years have been busier than others, but here we are. Finding gratitude and joy in your journey will become your pillar of strength. For one day you will look back on these years and remember that’s where your personal strength emerged from.
