In the year 2099, in a vicious caste system where America’s CEOs have all the power and everyone else must grovel in order to survive, a lonely young man meets and bonds with a predatory mermaid whose race is suffering because of mankind’s actions.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wrote it back in 2019, when I realized that the reason so little action has been taken against the climate crisis is because those at the top don't want to change the status quo. Never mind that this unsustainable way of living will turn this once-beautiful Earth into a hellscape unsuitable for life. Just as long as they get to continue making money, they're fine with the way things are. I felt so disillusioned, so hopeless, so angry, that I poured all of my raw feelings into this story. Furthermore, being a lover of mythology and fantasy, I decided to use a mermaid as a metaphor for nature: beautiful, vicious, and intricately tied to human behavior despite keeping a distance from us. When they come across this beautiful creature, humanity's first instinct is to exploit her for their own gain. But all is not lost. Even though they might be punished, there are people willing to do what's right.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The mermaid character was easy. She's a force of nature, untamed yet unspeakably gentle. The mermaid represents nature, and how we use and abuse it for our own gain. Beyond that, I tried to give her a likable personality: she's naive because her species has no concept of lying; she's intelligent and quick to learn our language; and she's unflinchingly loyal to those she sees as kin.
The main character is a bit like me when I first realized the reality of the climate crisis – or, rather, why so little had been done to stop it. He's the mouthpiece to all of the anger and bitterness I felt at the time. His backstory makes him all the more resentful to the system he was born into. I also made him asexual because, in truth, I'd been meaning to for a while. His bond with the mermaid is emotional, but not romantic.
The main character's father is very different from his son. Having grown up to witness this new world order cement itself, he's aware of his place in it. He fears rocking the boat, and feels that it would be best if everyone just kept their heads down and did as they're told. But as sometimes happens in life, it's the child that ends up teaching the parent rather than the other way around.
The main antagonist is one of the rich. He lives a life of almost comical decadence, feasting every day while those working for him rely on monthly rations. But he wasn't always this way. No, he was born in the slums and had to claw his way to the top. He relied on his cunning and ruthlessness to get to where he is now, and is aware that there are millions of people who'd kill to be where he is now. At the same time, he knows that he is not one of the wealthy. He wasn't born wealthy; he had to work his way to where he stands today. Thus, he guards his riches jealously and is quick to remind everyone of who he is now.
