How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
Each of the seven stories is different. I didn’t want them all to be variations on the first theme. In this way there are ghost stories, supernatural tales, accounts of unfortunate happenings, and lastly – albeit not in that order – what I would term, a horror story. Of course, one man’s horror is another man’s ghost.
Only the reader can decide whether I’ve been successful.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
For me, it’s all about the story. Some extremely gifted writers will weave magic around something that most of us consider commonplace, something we may overlook such as when raindrops strike a rose. They describe it as though it takes place in slow motion, not a detail omitted – even describing how the fragrance of the flower is elevated to another level in a rain shower. While I enjoy that level of detail, I imagine my readers sitting around a fire – usually during the evening in late autumn.
Outside, the trees have divested themselves of their leaves and, as darkness closes in, it’s possible to make out the branches silhouetted against the cold sky. Sometimes they resemble blackened, crooked stakes; at other times they are skeletal fingers reaching out for an innocent passerby. There has been no rain for days, so the slightest movement through the leaves makes a sound.
Inside, the room is lit only by the fire, and everyone is sitting comfortably … then I tell my story.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I have always told short stories. I had already written my first novel, as well as a novella – both science fiction. I then sent out to a group friends a short story, ‘The Ticket’. The response was along the lines: ‘I loved the story … are you going to write any more stories with xxx in them?’
This collection is the result.

I am a lawyer, married to a much smarter lawyer. We have a grown-up daughter who is even smarter than her mother, and writes exquisitely … but refuses to publish.
