What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I've been a frustrated writer since I was a teen, but I was never able to get a project completed. After I retired, I read a news article about the body of woman who was found dead in the marshes near my home in Florida. Who was she? I wondered. And that was the beginning of the Kate Cavanaugh mystery series.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Kate Cavanaugh is, in part, a composite of my daughter and my oldest granddaughter, but she is also very much herself. All other characters came to the book, as one famous author said, fully developed. Characters, it seems, can live in the nether regions of our minds.
“Hello Detective Lopez, I’m Dave Baron, we spoke on the phone earlier regarding Randy Goodwin and the Sharon Moore murder case. This is Kate Cavanaugh. She’s assisting us with the case. We’re in town on a related matter, and I thought I would stop in and update you on our initial interview with Mr. Goodwin.”
Renato Lopez turned and extended his hand to Kate. She felt a slight shock when their hands touched. She quickly pulled her hand away. He grinned and said, “Have a seat. Can I get you some coffee?” They both declined. Dave immediately launched into the details of the interview with Randy Goodwin and his attorney, Lewis Seymour. Kate focused her attention on Detective Lopez.
He leaned back in his chair and listened intently to Dave Baron. He did not move except to make an occasional note on a pad in front of him. He’s handsome, Kate thought looking at him closely, but not that handsome. Why had she felt that electrical charge when she shook his hand? He’s a lot of average; average height, average build, even the suit he’s wearing is average. He has intelligent eyes, she acknowledged, and a killer smile. She shook her head and focused on the conversation.
