Melvin Fastidious the Sailor by Dawn Young

By Book Goodies Leave a Comment

Melvin is a sailor in the Canadian navy. He likes everything at home and at work to be done ‘just so’. From his shoes shined just right, to his dungarees ironed with a beautiful crease, Melvin likes everything to be perfect.

Targeted Age Group:: 3 to 9 years

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The main character of this book, Melvin, was inspired by my father. My father is 80 years old and a veteran of the Canadian navy. When I was a child, I helped my father iron his clothes for work and shine his shoes. Everything had to be done just so. My father also used to get down on his hands and knees to remove the "bingles" from the carpet. His obvious OCD always made us laugh and still does when we recall the things he used to do.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
As mentioned above, the main character of the book was inspired by my father. Dad's middle name is Melvin and one of my aunts nicknamed him 'Melvin Fastidious' because of his peculiarities!
