Record snowfall has created chaos within the police department. An officer is killed in the line of duty, there’s a brutal slaying at the zoo and a store is robbed by a mannequin.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The books inspiration comes in the form of the 87th Precinct novels of Ed McBain. I wanted to recreate a police station by looking at multiple characters working on a range of cases at the same time.
The image of a young male walking barefoot in the snow came to me while I was working on plot lines and I took it from there.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Truthfully, I feel that I merely give the characters names, ranks and a lightly sketched backstory. Their personalities develop as they react to events in the story and I'm always amazed to see how three-dimensional they have become by the end of a novel.
Mike thought of the woman waiting for Shavers in a warm bed. She was probably about to turn out the lamp on the bedside table. Maybe the baby would start to cry in the next room and keep her awake as she waited for the hundredth time for her husband to come home late. Perhaps she'd forgive him just like always and pour herself another glass of fizz to keep her awake until he arrived.
And Mike hoped that these were the thoughts Ernie Shavers held onto as his life flowed into the snow.
