“Kara” is the debut novel by Alexia Zarate and is a romantic story as honest as it is clever. Based on true events, this book follows the emotional and difficult journey of Adrian Mayine. After an unexpected death, Adrian is left the husk of his former self. He struggles to both accept and give love. Until he meets Kara.
They are separated by their stark differences in character, each with their own flaws that provide heart wrenching twists and turns throughout. We see their love from different perspectives and in different situations. From jealousy to bliss and pain, we watch it all unfold as accurate to the real life events as possible.
Included are the letters sent from Adrian to Kara in real life. It is a story with bold beginnings and an even bolder ending. One you’ll never expect.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
This book is based off of a true story so I was inspired by the people I met and the stories of their lives. I thought their relationship was beautiful, something that I felt needed to be shared with others. That led me to creating characters from these individuals and then using their life events as a strong basis for my novel.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Some of the character’s traits are ones that I assigned to them but mostly I base characters off of people I know or see just in my daily life. Sometimes I meet very interesting people and I immediately think what possible adventures they might have if they were characters in a novel. That’s what sparks the initial development of the people in my book. I try to keep their diction and habits as similar to the ones in real life as I can.
“The love that grew within me wasn’t pretty or tame. It wasn’t a garden that bloomed slowly as it grew. Rather, it was a fire and my body, from the roots of my hair to the joints of my bones, was drenched in gasoline. It combusted into amaranthine flames that engrossed me whole until all I knew how to feel was that passionate heat consuming every inch of flesh I own.”
