Our story focuses on a young boy who lives at the foot of a hill with his mother. They have very little; in fact their home is merely a wooden square with a roof! On the hill that towers above their make-shift home is a mansion. Of course, the boy’s mother often wonders how it would be to live in such a mansion. Our boy journeys into the forest one morning, for no other reason than to spend some time outdoors. As he walks he discovers a few odds and ends that look seemingly worthless. Before long the boy realizes he has walked as far as the garden of the mansion on the hill. There he bumps into the weather-beaten owner. Embarrassed and afraid of being in trouble for trespassing, the boy apologizes to the weather-beaten man and turns to walk home. But before he leaves he is compelled to ask the man a simple question; How much money is your mansion worth?
The weather-beaten man says his mansion can’t be paid for in monies, but should someone offer him a few specific odds and ends, he’ll gladly trade his mansion for them. The boy realizes that the odds and ends the weather-beaten man seeks are those he’s found on his walk.
This story, illustrated by Marcin Osinski, was written to help children to see and understand that often we ignore the little things in life, including our newly-discovered talents, but that this can be a mistake. What we may deem insignificant may actually be worth the world to someone else.
How did you decide to create a trailer and what was your experience?
I had no experience at all! I wanted to hire someone to make a video for me, but they never got back to me. While I waited, my husband told me about Movie Maker in Windows, and… voila! It took me about three hours in total to create; the first hour working through the process of elimination. Windows has some awesome effects. But, it crashed once or twice, and of course I hadn’t saved… so… on my last attempt I saved after every change/addition!
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’ve always written stories. It’s the best way for me to explain things without sounding mundane or like a lecturer.
Carly van Heerden was born in England and raised in South Africa. Spurred by her highly-imaginative family, she began by first writing fantasy stories about talking animals. Her debut eBook was published on Amazon in 2012.
Carly lives in Sedgefield, South Africa, along the Garden Route where the Outeniqua Mountain Range meets the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean. Considered one of the most beautiful parts of the world, the Garden Route and its magnificent fauna and flora keep Carly inspired, day in and day out. With her lives her son, her husband and her four-legged family. Focusing her efforts toward the fiction/fantasy genre, she hopes to produce works that will be enjoyed and remembered.
