Interview with Author – William Alexander Clements

By Book Goodies

About William Alexander Clements:
William Clements has managed cybersecurity and information technology for small and mid-size businesses over the past 25 years. He has founded, co-founded, consulted, advised, partnered with, and invested in hundreds of businesses in dozens of industries. He founded the Chicago Technology Group, which is focused exclusively on keeping entrepreneurial businesses protected from cyber threats. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

What inspires you to write?
Most small businesses I've worked with over the years do not fully grasp the risks that cybercriminals pose to their livelihoods. I am not only concerned about the survival of my clients if a cyber attack occurs, but of all the small business owners that don't have a security specialist available to walk them through the measures they need to stay protected. Today's crimes don't just take the cash from the register, but they can create magnitudes of liability no one is prepared for. One criminal accessing $1,000 worth of small business data can result in $10 million in lawsuit settlements. Hopefully this book helps some owners and managers rethink their risk strategies.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
No favorites — read everything! Nearly every business book author has been helpful for at least one new or good idea. Sometimes you learn something, forget to act on it, then learn it again a decade later and realize it is exactly what your next step should be.

Tell us about your writing process.
90% research and professional experience, 10% writing. The writing may not be as polish as I'd like, but the fundamental knowledge transfer I'm hoping for should carry through. For the actual process, it's just Microsoft Word, a blank document, and me.

What advice would you give other writers?
Just start. It's never too early and it's never too late.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
While I had an offer from a traditional publisher, I really wanted the ability to set the book price low enough to really help small business owners. So, I decided to self-publish. I'm certain the book launch will cost significantly more than it will make (especially with a five day free promotional period with heavy advertising), but I believe in the long-run it will be worth it. While I don't strictly believe in karma, I do believe everyone should give back to the world and hopefully the world returns the favor.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Printed books are awesome and I wouldn't ever trade my over populated physical library for anything. The Kindle/ebook world is definitely easier and faster for book releases, with benefits for both authors (especially indie) and readers alike. Hopefully it is still affordable to stock physical bookshelves, since I always buy the physical copy and usually the audiobook.

What genres do you write?: business

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print, Audiobook
