Valeri finds it strange to write about herself in the third person so without further ado..
There are really just too many things about me to include here so I’ll try and keep it simple. I’m a writer, singer, designer…and a bit indecisive as you can tell from my abbreviated list of attributes!
In my head, I’m many other things, including a ninja, ballerina and linguist…that means I love languages. Did you know I can now say OMG, in 5 ways??? Awesome, right!
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until 9th grade that I finished my first REAL story. I got a demerit in ROTC for writing instead of listening to a lecture! Sadly, it was all in vain since while cleaning out my locker on the last day of school, I accidentally threw it away
But on to happier times…when I’m not writing/reading, I’m chasing my darling son and attempting to convince my favorite (and only!) husband, to try the results of my latest adventure in the kitchen.
Some of my favorite things-if you care, and even if you don’t-are:
Bookstores: smh…Borders, how I miss you (wiping faux tears)
MUSIC!!!!!! MUSIC!!!!!!! MUSIC!!!!!!
Martial Arts films
The Irony of Vengeance is my first published novella, but won’t be my last (insert villain laughter here)! I am in the process of writing book 2 and also trying to decide which of the numerous novels in my head to finish.
What inspires you to write?
Music. People watching. A funny story. Anything, really. Sometimes I’ll ride the train and people-watch. It’s fun to come up with stories about where a certain person is going or where they’ve been.
Tell us about your writing process.
Hmm, not sure that I could call it a “process”. I’ve tried and tried to create a writing “routine” but there are so many variables in my life that it’s really anything but routine. I try to start with writing for a least a few hours a day, usually between the hours of 12am-3am…I know, I know but why dream, when I can write!
I use a combination of outlines and character sketches. Usually I’ll map the story out then go back and fill in the details. The problem with this is that often times, characters end up doing what they want to do so I end up scrapping a very detailed plan 🙁
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Of course! Though I guess I should do a better job of talking with them instead of “at” them, haha!
What advice would you give other writers?
I think there’s much better advice out there than what I can give. What I will say is to get out of your head (in the bad way) and just write. It’s easy to get so caught up in the details of trying to make it “perfect” that we end up with a blank screen. I’ve learned that’s it best to just write “Linda is mad” then come back and flesh that out when the first draft is done! Otherwise, I’ll spend two days trying to figure out the best way to show how mad she is…By the way, she was irate!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I think new authors should explore all the options. If they choose to self-publish by way of vanity press (lulu, iuniverse, etc) I’d do my homework and make sure you’re retaining all your rights. I chose to self-publish (by creating my own publishing coming) just because I wanted to be in charge of all creative aspects of the book. I think both self-publishing and traditional publishing are beneficial in their own ways.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Great question. Its probably going to be filled with more self-publishers as people learn they can get more out of doing it themselves, even if it is more costly. Some argue that this means they’ll be a lot of crappy books but it all depends on the readers. What’s crappy to some is A+ writing to another…see Twilight and all its glory, haha! Either way, I think its great! Everyone has a story and they shouldn’t have to have the skill-set of Ernest Hemingway to tell it!
What do you use?
Professional Editor, Beta Readers
What genres do you write?
I write whatever’s in my mind at the time. I’m not a mime so I hate being boxed in!
What formats are your books in?
