About Three Kobolds in a Trench Coat:
I'm an avid Dungeon and Dragons player and that's where the inspiration for my book came from. I've also read a large number of fantasy books and have been a long fan of dragons. Its why the main character, Anakin, is a dragon.
What inspires you to write?
My book is loosely inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, not just the lore or gameplay but also the players and their interactions. I also like the concept of urban fantasy but I'm not really interested in the whole hidden world thing like with Harry Potter and a few other similar stories. Which is why the world of the Department of Adventuring is an alternate version of Earth. I do enjoy trying to make the world of a story feel real. The way that magic and monsters are as much part of the ecosystem as animals and plants are in the real world. Putting a lot of the fantasy tropes into a modern setting was also interesting like giving characters smart phones that can project images as illusions or a branch of the government that deals with magical crimes and dangers.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
J. R. R. Tolkien is one of my favorite authors. I also read some of H. P. Lovecraft's works as well as Robert E. Howard. The most recent author I've been reading is Tui Sutherland.
Tell us about your writing process.
I just write when it comes to me. I don't really do outlines, I know how I want the story to go and what the ending will be but what happens between the beginning and ending I add as the story is written.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don't force it. Just let the writing come to you naturally. No one has ever written anything good if they just tried to push out the next paragraph. Come back to the story when you think of something good and don't be afraid to let others help you with things like grammar or cohesiveness.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I looked for self publishers to help me and went with the one that I could afford but would also meet all of my needs. I spoke with people who worked there to make sure that they would give me the best deal but also looked at company reviews. If the company has different packages, they will give you the best deal.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think people will always want to read something and have their imaginations challenged despite visual media like TV and movies. You get a better sense of a character when you're listening to their thoughts.
What genres do you write?: Fantasy
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
