When I was a child my mother kept a black suitcase in our basement. She forbade me to look inside. Of course as we all know the way to spark a child’s curiosity is to tell them they are forbidden to do or see a particular thing. One afternoon when my mother was out, I raced down stairs. Nobody was around so I opened the suitcase. Inside I found pictures and letters in a foreign language. Later that night I asked my mother what all of it meant. She told me that she was trying to protect me by keeping the suitcase out of my reach, but since I’d found it I might as well know that she and my father both lost their entire extended families in the Holocaust. So began my obsession with the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. Being that my father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, I had many aspects to research and much to learn. Finally, many years later…I wrote my first novel. It is set in this period. It comes to you, along with all of my work, from my heart, with love and hopes that someday there will be understanding and tolerance among all peoples. I thank you so much for your interest in my writing.
Love, Blessings, Good Fortune, and as the Gypsies say Good Road to all of you,
What inspires you to write?
The first book I wrote is the story of a Jewish girl and a German boy who fall in love just as Hitler is appointed Chancellor of Germany. It is called “All My Love, Detrick.” This novel came to me in a unique way. I had never written a word in my life. In fact, I was a hair dresser for 25 years doing hair replacement. As the economy started to go bad, I began losing clientele. One night, in sheer desperation, I got down on my knees and prayed. I asked God to show me a direction. I thought I would wake up and probably go to work at one of the chain hair salons. But that isn’t what happened at all. At four am that morning I got up with a story in my head. I got out of bed and began to write. That story was “All My Love, Detrick.”
Another fact I would like to share with you. “All My Love, Detrick,” begins when Detrick is seven years old. He receives a bicycle for his birthday. Because of what happens with that bike, he is lead to the Jewish sector of town where his life altering adventure begins. Last year when my daughter went Israel on Birthright, she was taken to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial. As everyone was going through the museum, she happened to look up. there over her head for no reason at all was a black bicycle suspended from the ceiling. It was exactly as I saw it in my mind as I wrote “All My Love, Detrick. And it was exactly as I described it in the book. What does it mean? I don’t know for sure. But I believe that God sent me a true story, one he wanted me to give voice to. And I believe that bike hanging in the Holocaust memorial is Detrick’s bike.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process, is really strange. I wait for the characters to come to me. Sometimes they don’t come for a while. Then…just as I am taking a shower and my hair is full of shampoo, boom, they’re ready to talk. So, I have to jump out of the shower, soap still in my hair, and get to the computer before the moment is lost.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I both talk and listen to my characters. I also watch them like a movie in my head.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing. If you are inspired to write, then I believe God has a message he wants to send out to the world through you. Deliver that message. It is your purpose.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I knew that I must share my books with the world. It was my responsibility.. Most of my books are set during the Holocaust. i am trying to give a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves. I want the world to know that, yes, the Holocaust was a terrible time, and although it brought out the worst in people, it also brought out unexpected Heroes. When people step out of their comfort zone and even risk their lives to save others that is truly the work of God.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that the future of publishing lies in self publishing. As time goes on I feel that the big publishing houses will have less impact on the literary world. In the past the readers were only exposed to books that publishers decided to put on the market. The world of self publishing has given the reader the choice of what they deem worthy of their reading time. And, after all, isn’t the reader the most important aspect of the writing world?
