Interview with Author – Ricky Baxter

By Book Goodies

About Ricky Baxter:
My name is Ricky and I am a London born, fantasy author of 13 novels and short novellas.

I am also a speaker who hosts creative workshops across schools nationwide! I love inspiring with my talks, whether as a guest speaker or hosting a creative workshops

My most notable novel is Blue Lunar & The Apex!

What inspires you to write?
That is such a good question!

I am inspired by the most random things. No two things are ever the same, so I never really know when the inspiration will kick in! I might listen to a song which may fill my imagination with a new story and scenarios. On the other hand, I may be talking with a friend and be enlightened by a certain character trait of theirs. In general, I find the world is a beautiful stage for inspiration!

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I absolutely love Miyuki Miyabe, an extremely underrated author from Japan. She wrote ICO: Castle in the Mist, a beautiful tale about a boy who seeks to rescue a mysterious girl from a dark castle.

My other favourite author is Yuya Aoki, another Japanese author who wrote a light novel named: Psycho Busters.

Tell us about your writing process.
I often spend most of my writing process daydreaming. For me, sitting around or even walking is a great way to stir my plans for a story. We are told as children that daydreaming is a negative thing, but for writers, daydreaming is a valuable superpower!

I will then even draw scenarios and characters of my story. This is done via sketches and stick pictures within a notepad. This helps to bring it to life!

Finally, I simply sit down and begin writing. I often find writing late at night, without music or distractions is the best way. I also try not to spend too much time making my story perfect, when writing the first draft. Corrections and amendments can always come afterwards in multiple drafts

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I personally don't really talk to my characters. However, when I am writing, I am literally within the scenarios with my characters.
If there is a battle taking place, not only am I writing it, I am there with them! The same can be said for sad moments too. When they cry, I cry with them

What advice would you give other writers?
The advice I have always given others is: There is no One-Show-Fits-All, approach.

My way is unique to me and yours will be unique to you. This is something that should give you much confidence and excitement! Your writing journey is a story in itself, and the best thing is, you get to be the main character!

You will have ups and downs, some wins and knockbacks. However, the reward of having somebody read your work and enjoy it is priceless!

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-published, as I wanted to be in control of my novel. I have been curious about being with a traditional publisher, however upon research I found that self-publishing is very much suited to me.
I self publish through Amazon and that has provided me with a host opportunity's such as workshops and public speaking.

I would say, whether going self or trad publishing, it's always a good idea to buy The Writer & Artists Yearbook 2025. It has a ton of information for writers!

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
This is an interesting question, one that I often talk about with my friends

I believe that the book publishing world will shift, much the same way the music publishing world and film world has shifted. In my opinion, many authors will go their own path and reach their own readers, without the narrow options of the past

What genres do you write?: Fantasy

What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Both eBook and Print, Audiobook
