What inspires you to write?
I grew up in an era in America when it was not acceptable to be a bi-racial child. However, with that said, I was compelled to write about the racial tones and colorism which existed in my community during the late 1950’s-1960’s. I am a new writer and I want to take the veil off of the uncomfortable (for some) topic of racism/colorism that still exists in America well in 2015. Certainly my childhood era was most testing, but there were loving and noble people that encouraged me to eventually write of my experiences even if it was through a fictional novel. And so it is.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing is guided by my higher consciousness in a sense that I use my intuition regarding my creativity in that respect. I am not trying to be indifferent but true to myself in my writing processes. I do not use whiteboard, software or the like. I use outlines, index cards (old school) and a huge bulletin board to link some of the flow of the story. I take a break when I tire and reflect quietly for creative influences to come to me during difficult stalemating of writing sessions. And so it is.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Again, I indeed put myself in my characters shoes so to speak. Writing with true intuition drives me to really listen to what I know the character would like to state and I try to express it similarly.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write according to your expectations and no one elses. Do not allow offensive or negative criticism stop you in your tracks. Become the writer that you know that you are by listening to what YOU want to write and create in your story for all to share.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
In all honesty, I trusted my work only to myself in its presentation. After discovering the availability of self-publishing, I wanted to explore that option as it satisfied my desire to independently control my manuscript to the very end.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Book publishing surely has grown in leaps and bounds. I am glad finally to be a part of this industry. And I am looking forward to learning more of the industry’s options so that I may continue to be a independent writer and succeed and help others in the meantime.
