Marcia Goldlist grew up in Toronto, Canada. She is a retired principal and Director of Family Education. In recent years she started to write rhymes for various occasions. At some point people started to ask Marcia to write poems for their family occasions. This led her to write several books in her Express Yourself in Rhyme series. However, her biggest joy is her The Bible in Rhyme series because she loves making religion enjoyable and meaningful.
As a result of her publications Marcia has begun giving talks on self-publishing.
Marcia now lives in Israel with her family. She is the mother of four and the grandmother of five with another one on the way.
What inspires you to write?
I am inspired by the results of my work. I challenged myself to write the book of Genesis in rhyme and I did it! Then I challenged myself to publish the book which I called Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme. I did that too! Then I challenged myself to write the book of Exodus in rhyme. I am happy to say that I accomplished that too! I am challenging myself to write more books of the Bible in rhyme and to sell them!
Tell us about your writing process.
Since I “rewrite” the Bible I don’t need to worry about outlines or thinking about what to write. My challenge is to figure out how to be true to the source material in rhyme. I often look at many different translations of the Bible to help me think of different ways of wording the same thing until I can find a suitable wording for a rhyme.
An important aspect of writing is staying focused. You have to keep in mind what you want to say but be flexible in how you say it.
What advice would you give other writers?
The best advice for writers is to write write write and then edit edit edit and then edit again. When you believe that you are finished publish your work. There is nothing wrong with self-publishing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When I realized that I really could complete Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme I wanted to share it with others. I really believe that this is a meaningful book that can help people connect with the Bible. The only way to share the book with lots of people was to publish it.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that self-publishing will have a big market share of the publishing industry. I don’t think that books will disappear but I do think that ebooks and especially enhanced ebooks will grow in the market share.
