About Mae Segeti:
We are a young couple, that is fairly new to writing. Nic, as well as being a budding writer, is a professional sculptor, a designer and actor. Mae is a former professional ballerina turned model/actress/author. In a twist of cosmic fate, our paths crossed one night in LA and we pretty much fell for each other from day one ….
When we are not writing or reading books, we like to go to museums or to the opera. We also love to travel, and enjoy going hiking and backpacking.
The characters in our stories are, loosely, based on family – nephews, nieces, aunts and uncles… Even the cats and dogs in the stories are based on family pets. In the future, we’ll be introducing more characters and creating a few offshoot series so that readers can continue their adventures with us and our family.
What inspires you to write?
We both love books. Nic prefers hard copy books, and his favorite places are used bookstores and the library. He’s even had several bookshelves collapse under the weight of his collection over the years. Mae prefers e-books, and doesn’t go anywhere without her Kindle. The inspirations for the children’s books were our nephews and niece and their love for books. It is rare to see children who love books as much as those kids do. We wanted to create something that they would enjoy reading so we decided to base the characters on them.
Tell us about your writing process.
We love taking walks every day. We come up with book ideas on these walks. The first draft is generally written by Mae, then she passes it on to Nic, who expands and colors the stories. After several drafts of going back and forth, the book is ready to go to the editors.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
We talk to the actual people the characters are based on regularly, they are our family members, so that offers us a lot of inspiration. Both of us have had extensive acting training in our background and that helps us take the real life characters and blend them with the fictionalized versions in our heads.
What advice would you give other writers?
I never thought I’d be able to write a book, honestly I never really wanted to. However I had a message that I really wanted to share with people, and that is why I created my very first book about holistic healing and acid reflux. During this process I realized how much I enjoyed creating and publishing books, so I kept going. It is a wonderful feeling to see that people enjoy and are helped by my books, and it is priceless to see them on best seller lists.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I didn’t think that a publisher would be interested in my books, so I never even considered doing it any other way than self publishing. This way we have full control. Amazon allowing authors to self publish their books is a wonderful opportunity. I wouldn’t do it any other way.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I love books, and everybody in my family does too. This is why I’m surprised to see how many people don’t read. You can learn anything and everything by reading the right books.
People will always be interested in new stories. However the form of these stories may change like it has in the past from books, to e-books, audio books, radio plays to movies and TV series.
