M. K. Clinton lives in northwest Louisiana. She and her husband have been blissfully married for over thirty years. The parents of two grown children, they are now enjoying the freedom of not punching a clock every day. After working at a local high school as an office clerk, library clerk, and cheerleader coach for many years, M. K. decided to stay home and concentrate on writing. It is a much quieter existence, unless it is college football or baseball season. During those times, the household can get extremely loud.
The couple shares their home with Tucker, a happy, fun-loving Golden Retriever, and Bentley, a lovable Basset Hound. She found the inspiration for her first book, The Returns, on Bentley’s coat. He was born with a perfect number seven on his hip. Ironically, he is also the seventh dog that the family has owned!
What inspires you to write?
I have been an avid reader for years. It has always been a dream of mine to write a book for others to enjoy. The opportunity presented itself for me to become a full time writer after my children were grown. The books that I am writing now are inspired by my love of dogs and laughter.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing is not an organized outline driven process. I usually have to go back over the pages and actually see what appeared on the computer screen. I usually write in silence so the words can flow through my brain uninterrupted. It is a fun and exciting experience!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters talk to me all of the time. I can be in the middle of grocery shopping or watching television and one of the dogs/people will just start a conversation in my head. I have learned that means to write down whatever they may ramble about because I will not remember it later. I have so many notes on my iphone from them that I have to transpose them each day. Most of those conversations usually take place in the middle of the night. I laugh at most of the things they are saying.
What advice would you give other writers?
I have a quote that I found on Pinterest from Toni Morrison and I think it serves every writer well. “If there is a book that you want to read but it hasn’t been writen yet, then you must write it.” That is exactly how I feel about The Returns. I love dogs, cats, a little romance, adventure and lots of laughter. I hadn’t found a book that exactly fit that criteria for me…so I wrote it!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I have self published through Amazon Kindle and it has been great! I decided to go that route because I don’t like rejection and I didn’t have money to spend paying for it to be published. It was a no-brainer for me! It wasn’t until after I published that I realized the writing of the book was the easiest part of the process! It takes a lot of shameless self promotion on the author’s part.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that indie publishing will put a lot of the big name publishing houses in a bind. There are so many authors doing their own work these days and of course, the e-readers are making print go the way of magazines and newspapers. As a former library clerk, I still love the feel and smell of the printed word but as the saying goes:” the times they are a-changing.” I believe those of us self publishing now are on the ground level of the next wave of writing!
