I am a genuine octomom, the old fashion way, one baby at a time. Having babies over a period of 21 years has left me a few french fries short of a Happy Meal. Not only did I have them the old fashion way, I had them with ONE husband; yes he is still alive, just barely. As you can imagine I have a few stories to tell, however, I do not tell very many stories of my kiddos in my book, I’m Not Bipolar, I’m Just a Fruitcake with a Dream! Surviving the Emotional Roller Coaster of a Dream Gone Bad.
This book is a poignant journey of my “mid-life” crisis brought on by the unwelcomed, unexpected, and unintentional estrangement of my eldest child at the age of nearly 21. Having grown up in families of multiple estrangements, my husband and I vowed to “stop the dysfunction.” Little did we know, dysfunctional people can’t stop the dysfunction without a little help.
My husband says of this book, “It covers everything but the kitchen sink,” because I never want to do this again. He told me I should have spread out my topics and made a trilogy, I much prefer to just have a “one-hit-wonder.” Not only do I cover family estrangements, mid-life crisis, estrogen-depletion, perimenopause, ADHD, adult depression, country music and it’s delicious eye-candy, and a whole bunch more. In this unique book, I use modern-day icons to represent some lesser known Biblical characters in such a delightful, humorous way to entertain, inform, and encourage my readers. It is my goal in this book to not only exhort my readers of their possibilities that they can achieve but to prove to them the God is intimately involved in their lives, sitting right beside them in the “passenger” seat whether they recognize or believe it or not. This book is not only an original, but I do believe that is is the first of its kind and I dare say, no one would ever be able to find a book like this one. I tell my more advanced “Biblically Scholarly” friends, that this book is no “Spurgeon,” but I wasn’t writing it to them, rather to the other 90% normal people walking the Earth searching for answers to the age old question we all ask, “why does this happen in life?”
What inspires you to write?
I say that this book was divinely inspired because no normal person could take on such a daunting task trying to cover as many “life” question/topics in one book. It isn’t a 700 page book, but it is 228 delightfully funny and uplifting pages. I tell people that “God wrote this book, He just borrowed my laptop and my sense of humor.”
I have always wanted to write a book, until I actually sat down and did it. Now, I wonder, why did I ever want to do this in the first place? I learned so much during this process with the most important lesson being, it is extremely difficult if not nearly impossible to write a multi-topic book with not only seven children and a husband living at home, but ADHD and estrogen depletion going against oneself. This book is nothing short of miraculous because it would take a BIG God to get that task accomplished, and I dare say, He did a fabulous job.
Tell us about your writing process.
Having been a new author and never having even attempted writing before, I employed all different methods and crafted close to 149 drafts before perfection came even close. I will not call my book perfect, but for me, with all that I had going on in my life, it is darn close!
How did you decide how to publish your book?
I decided to go with a POD assisted publisher as a freshman author I needed help breaking into the business and knew that having been “assigned” this enormous task, I needed to take extra effort to make sure I did what I was supposed to do and got the message of ~Simple Grace~ out to the masses that I believe God had employed me to do.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I do believe with the explosion in POD publishers that the traditional publishing industry is going to have to completely revamp the way that they view potential authors in the future and realize they do not hold a monopoly on the literary market anymore.
