Interview with Author – Jasmine L. Quan

By Book Goodies

About Jasmine L. Quan:
Jasmine L. Quan swapped luxury fashion boardrooms for a life devoted to felines — first as a tiger conservation advocate, now as an author chronicling the escapades of her spirited cat, Gigia. Her books weave real feline mischief with a deep respect for wild cousins still fighting for survival. When she’s not writing, Jasmine uses her fashion-honed storytelling skills to champion endangered big cats — while Gigia (who insists she deserves top billing) supervises from the keyboard. For daily proof that housecats rule the world, follow their adventures.

What inspires you to write?
I write because these extraordinary creatures—from tigers to tabbies—deserve their stories told louder.
They’re not just animals; they’re teachers, survivors, and comedians with whiskers. Tigers showed me the ferocity of resilience. Gigia, my trickster muse, proved that cats defy every lazy stereotype—one hula-hoop leap at a time.
Felines don’t whisper. They demand to be seen. And if my words can make even one person rethink what’s possible between humans and cats, I’ve done my job.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
There are many writers that I admire and respect. Should I have to pick one, i'd say my altime favirout is Charles Dickens and

Tell us about your writing process.
My process is a dance between chaos and clarity—jotting down wild fragments first, then weaving them into a loose outline. But the true magic comes from my co-authors: those feline ghosts who linger in the margins. The wild ones (tigers with thunder in their paws) taught me about courage. The small ones (house cats with opera in their meows) taught me about grace. All of them still whisper their stories. My job? Just to listen… and keep the treats flowing.

What advice would you give other writers?
1. When writing my tiger book, I vanished for a month, fuelled by instant noodles and single-minded focus. For Gigia and Me, I became her shadow—retracing our steps through Venice, verifying every tail flick and sidelong glance.
So my only rule? Let the story choose the method. Some demand you disappear into the cave; others send you chasing a cat across cobblestones. The trick is to surrender to both with equal recklessness.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
My first two books followed the traditional path—publisher timelines, editorial committees, the whole dance. But with Gigia and Me, I needed speed and agility. Amazon’s revolution (and my cat’s impatient glare) led me to a nimble print-on-demand publisher. No warehouses, no waitlists—just stories reaching readers at the pace they deserve.

Turns out, tigers move at glacial speeds. House cats? They demand now.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Traditional gatekeepers will always have prestige, but the real energy is in niche agility—writers who, like cats, choose their own paths. Print-on-demand and digital platforms let stories find audiences at the speed of need (or a tabby’s demand for treats).
What won’t change? Hunger for soulful stories. Whether it’s tigers or trick-training tabbies, readers crave voices that make them feel. The publishers who thrive will be those who help those voices leap farther—without clipping their claws.
