About Jack Selvaggio:
When I started writing, I jumped into it blindly. My first creative passion was martial arts which was a big part of my life. After having to part ways with a path in MMA due to an injury, I looked for something to fill that void. Writing was something I was always pretty good at, no joke probably saved me from getting bad grades in school. Ultimately I took the chance to create something people could enjoy through writing. I was able to fuse my martial arts experience to make battle scenes truly come alive. I took it upon myself to do all the work, truly a one-man show. I also wanted to write something unique and different, not like other authors. It’s been pretty rewarding and makes me feel good. I hope that readers can make a connection with Madeleine. If my character made an impact on them, then I fulfilled my goal.
What inspires you to write?
I can take inspirations from anything and much of my writing is inspired from childhood nostalgia. I also specialize in short stories more than anything. This is because I'm just better at writing in smaller frameworks rather than long drawn out ones.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
This may shock people but I’m not much of a reader. *GASP*. I know, but it’s true. I feel it makes me unique though in a way, or maybe just an oddball. But I love creative writing and using my imagination.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don’t write start to finish, It’s all over the place. Sorta like: Very Beginning. Somewhere towards the end. Part of Middle. In between scenes. End. Yeah it’s goofy. I kinda spontaneously write scenes out as they come to my head. Then connect everything together like puzzle pieces later on. It also helps me avoid writer’s block.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Since my writing is told through my character's voice, I basically talked out loud as the them while writing the whole time.
What advice would you give other writers?
I usually don't like giving advice because everyone's journey is different. What works for me, might not work for you. I would say to just write what you really want to write and love. And stay committed to it.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish because I like to do things on my own and go my own way. It was the best option to have good creative control over my work. Self-publishing is definitely a more difficult route but I think it's more rewarding in the end.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think you'll see more self-publishing and indies in general. It's becoming more popular not only in the writing space but has also exploded in other spaces like video games.
What genres do you write?: Childrens, Middle Grade, Action-Adventure
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
