Interview with Author – Hiba KIAL

By Book Goodies

About Hiba KIAL:
Hiba KIAL is an architect, writer, pianist, artist, and anthropological researcher whose work reflects a profound dedication to understanding the human experience. Rooted in architecture, her approach is deeply influenced by her exploration of how civilizations, cults, and societies have shaped urban landscapes throughout history. This passion for tracing the past and uncovering the essence of human evolution seamlessly intertwines with her literary pursuits, where she delves into identity shifts, cognitive transformation, and the search for self-improvement. Through her writing, she captures the complexities of the psyche, reflecting on the lessons that have sculpted her identity and continuously seeking the true essence of personal growth. Her artistry and music further enrich her creative expression, allowing her to translate raw emotion and deep thought into visual and auditory forms. With a unique philosophy that prioritizes authenticity over recognition, Hiba creates timeless work that resonates with those who seek truth, beauty, and a deeper understanding of the world.

What inspires you to write?
What inspires me to write is the relentless pursuit of truth and the desire to capture the essence of the human experience. Writing is where my mind wanders freely, unrestricted by time or space, allowing me to explore identity shifts, emotional depths, and the complexities of self-discovery. I am drawn to the subtle patterns that shape our thoughts and behaviors, the invisible threads that connect civilizations and cultures, and the raw emotions that define our existence. Through writing, I not only document these revelations but also transform them into something tangible—something that lingers, provokes, and resonates. It’s an intimate dance between thought and expression, where every word becomes a reflection of my soul and a testament to the world as I perceive it.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I am drawn to authors who masterfully capture the essence of the human experience and challenge conventional thought. The works of Jules Verne, with his visionary storytelling and exploration of the unknown, resonate deeply with my curiosity for history and civilization. Colette’s introspective prose and ability to express raw emotion inspire my own exploration of identity and self-discovery. I also find profound beauty in philosophical and psychological literature, where authors delve into the complexities of the mind and human behavior. Each writer I encounter leaves an imprint, influencing my perspective and enriching my creative process.

Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is deeply intuitive and fluid, guided more by emotion and thought exploration than rigid structures. I wouldn’t label myself as a strict outliner, nor do I fully embrace the "seat of the pen" approach. Instead, I allow my mind to wander, immersing myself in the essence of what I want to express before committing words to paper. It’s an impression before an expression—a philosophy that lets my subconscious work through ideas and emotions until they naturally take form. I often rely on raw notes and sketches, capturing fleeting thoughts and visual inspirations that later evolve into cohesive narratives. Whether it's reflecting on identity shifts, cognitive transformation, or the intricate patterns of history and culture, I allow my work to flow organically, letting the story and its characters reveal themselves along the way.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
When I write, I don’t merely create characters—I become them. Writing in the first person allows me to fully embody the protagonist, experiencing the world through their thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. With an omniscient yet internally focused point of view, I immerse myself in their reality, blurring the lines between my own consciousness and theirs. This deep connection enables me to convey raw emotions and intricate reflections with authenticity, as I navigate their struggles, desires, and transformations from within. Rather than talking to my characters, I let them speak through me, allowing their voices to flow naturally onto the page.

What advice would you give other writers?
Express yourself fully and without restraint. Writing is not about fitting into predefined molds or replicating what has already been said; it’s about capturing your unique perspective and sharing it with the world. Every person experiences life through a distinct lens, and that individuality is what makes your work valuable. Don’t be afraid to dive deep into your thoughts, emotions, and imagination—let your writing be raw, authentic, and unapologetically yours. Remember, true creativity comes from embracing vulnerability and allowing your words to flow freely, without fear of judgment.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I navigate between traditional publishing and self-publishing, as each offers unique advantages that align with different aspects of my creative journey. Traditional publishing provides a platform for broader reach and collaboration, while self-publishing grants me the freedom to maintain full creative control and connect more intimately with my audience. I believe that every writer should explore both avenues to determine what best suits their vision, schedule, and interaction with their readers. Ultimately, it's about finding the right balance that allows your work to flourish authentically.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the future of book publishing is evolving toward greater diversity and creative freedom. With the rise of self-publishing platforms and digital formats, authors now have the power to share their voices without the constraints of traditional gatekeeping. This shift allows for more authentic storytelling and niche exploration, while still offering opportunities for collaboration with established publishers. However, the essence of publishing will always lie in the quality of the content and the connection it fosters with readers. As technology advances, I envision a more interconnected and global literary community, where stories transcend borders and cultures, enriching the human experience.
