What inspires you to write?
My readers. Contrary to popular belief, writing is hard work. And there are days when I wonder if I have it in me to write another book. But then my readers tell me how much they loved my book and that they can’t wait until the next one. They keep me writing.
Tell us about your writing process.
My new release, Devil’s Playground, I wrote completely by the seat of my pants. Though it helped that it was based on an actual historical event so part of it already had some outline. For the second book in the series I have written out a very basic outline so I know where I want to end up, but even then it can change if that’s not what my characters want to happen. Believe it or not, they write the book more than I do sometimes.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t talk or listen when I’m not at the computer for my designated “writing time.” And even then, a lot of time their voices have a hard time breaking in through the voices of my children. But at times they do drive the story more than I do.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t write for money. Don’t write to be famous. Write because you have something you want to share with the world. If you are writing for any other reason, you will not be happy as a writer (it can be a very thankless, time consuming endeavor), and you most likely won’t write anything worth sharing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I first sought agent representation but eventually went with a small traditional publisher. Part of the reason is because I didn’t get an offer of representation, but I also now have a lot more freedom than I would have with a bigger publisher. It’s a great blessing to me.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I see a lot more books being published as e-books first before going to print as publishers try to get a feel for the market. I think that that will just grow exponentially. My hope is that one day the publishers will have a rating system for books similar to movies, video games, etc. A lot more is allowed to be in YA books and it would be nice for teenagers, parents, and even with adult books, to know the content when deciding what to buy.
