Grant James Turner from Manchester, UK aged 21, began writing late 2011 and deliberated on what to do with the manuscript, he decided that KDP was the way to go as he knew conventional publishing was going to be a challenge that he wouldn’t win.
He reads and writes mostly Horror with strong elements of the paranormal and supernatural every now and again he will dabble with crime but it is not his forte.
What inspires you to write?
Lots of things inspire me to write, sometimes I could be watching a film and think – “They are onto something good here, I wonder how I could make it my own and add new twists to it to make it better” other times I could be out walking and something will just hit me and I don’t mean someone or something! The idea will just pop in there, but I do rely quite heavily on dreams. They feature in a lot of my stories.
Tell us about your writing process
I am a type as you go writer, I think of the situations and the conversations sometimes even the scenery in my head then I just let my fingers go to town on the keyboard.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
It may seem weird but I converse with them, I let them have the first say before counter acting with what could be said, that is how my dialogue gets written!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Well I was going to try the conventional route and get with a publisher but I am very critical of my own work so I decided that with them more than likely to turn me down a million times I would go to Kindle – it was from there I found out about some of the other e-book publishers.
For new authors I would suggest Kindle as your starting point, it offers free promotional days which help get the attention of your book and boost the popularity plus their forum community are great!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think slowly the written word on paper will become very hard to acquire, unless the publishers make it a little easier to get into because e-book publishing is allowing anyone and everyone. Which isn’t always a great thing, but it allows people to achieve their dream. Made mine come true at least.
