Interview with Author – Dudu Zimba

By Book Goodies

About Dudu Zimba:
I’m a South African author with a deep fascination for the darker, more intricate sides of human nature. My writing focuses on crime thrillers, where I explore themes of morality, justice, and the unseen forces that drive our decisions. I love crafting suspenseful, fast-paced stories that not only keep readers hooked but also challenge them to think about the complexities of the human condition.

So far, I’ve published two novels, each of which has helped me grow as a storyteller and push the boundaries of the genre. My latest book, *The Monk Who Fell in Love: Forbidden*, takes a bold step into uncharted territory, delving into the tension between duty and desire in a world where love is forbidden.

My work is deeply rooted in South Africa’s rich history, folklore, and societal dynamics. I strive to bring these elements to life in my stories, creating vivid settings and characters that linger in readers’ minds long after they’ve turned the last page. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me reading, researching, or drawing inspiration from the world around me.

What inspires you to write?
I’m endlessly intrigued by the choices people make when faced with moral dilemmas. Crime thrillers, in particular, give me the perfect canvas to explore the psychology behind crime, justice, and the human condition. My stories are often inspired by real-world events, historical mysteries, and the intricate dynamics of human relationships.

South Africa’s vibrant cultures, untold stories, and deep-rooted traditions also play a huge role in shaping my narratives. I love weaving these elements into my work, creating stories that are not only gripping but also deeply resonant.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I’m drawn to authors who excel at suspense, character depth, and emotional storytelling. Some of my all-time favorites include:

– Agatha Christie – for her brilliant mysteries and intricate plots.
– Gillian Flynn – for her dark, psychological thrillers.
– Chinua Achebe – for his profound storytelling and cultural depth.
– Stephen King – for his mastery of suspense and character-driven narratives.
– Michael Connelly – for his gripping crime novels and compelling protagonists.

Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is a mix of structure and spontaneity. Before I start, I outline the major plot points using a combination of old-school notebooks and digital tools like Scrivener. That said, I always leave room for the unexpected—sometimes the story takes a turn I didn’t see coming, and I let my characters guide the way.

I also spend a lot of time developing my characters before I begin writing. I create detailed profiles that include their backstories, motivations, and personal conflicts. This helps me ensure they feel authentic and fully realized.

I’m most productive in the early mornings or late at night, and I like to switch up my writing environment to keep things fresh. Sometimes I write at home, other times in a café, or even outdoors—wherever the creativity flows.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Absolutely! In fact, I don’t just listen to them—I sometimes argue with them. When I’m writing, I immerse myself so deeply in their emotions and perspectives that they almost feel real. I imagine their voices, their reactions, and their inner struggles. There have been times when I’ve had to rewrite entire scenes because a character refused to follow the path I’d originally planned for them. They demand authenticity, and I respect that.

What advice would you give other writers?
Write the story only you can tell. It’s easy to get caught up in trends or self-doubt, but your unique perspective and voice are what make your work stand out. Consistency is also key—write regularly, even when you don’t feel inspired. Writing is like a muscle; the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes.

And don’t be afraid of rejection or criticism. They’re part of the journey. Learn from them, grow, and keep moving forward.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I chose to self-publish because I wanted full creative control over my work. Self-publishing allows me to manage everything from my release schedule to book design and marketing. It’s been a challenging but incredibly rewarding process, and I’ve learned so much about the publishing industry along the way.

For new authors, I’d recommend exploring both traditional and self-publishing options to see what aligns best with your goals. If you go the self-publishing route, invest in professional editing and cover design—it makes a world of difference.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the future of publishing will continue to shift toward digital accessibility and self-publishing platforms. While traditional publishing still holds a lot of prestige, indie authors are gaining more recognition, and readers are embracing diverse voices from all walks of life.

Audiobooks and interactive storytelling are also becoming increasingly popular, and I think they’ll play a bigger role in how stories are consumed. At the end of the day, though, great storytelling will always find its audience, no matter the medium.
