Bio: I was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky in February of 1971. I joined the military right after graduating from high school, and served twenty years there. During my time with the Army, I deployed to Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kwajalein Atoll, and Cambodia. The military gave me the opportunity to experience firsthand many amazing and horrifying things, and I feel these things have benefited me in my writing.
I currently have three novels out at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Books A Million; all are traditionally published: Lost Time, Barter for Life, and Unconscious Lies.
What inspires you to write?
I started reading Stephen King when I was 8 years old and wanted to write ever since. My career in the military put everything on hold, but the dream remained.
Tell us about your writing process.
Since I work full time, writing for me is piece-meal. I write whenever I get the chance, and onc I’ve got 70-80k words, I sit down and put it into chapter/book format. I’ve streamlined the process of the past year, and if I can squeeze out three full months, I can produce a novel.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
A lot of my characters come from my dreams, but not all. Sometmes I base them on people I know, friends from my hometown and so on.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write, write, write. The only way to perfect the craft is to do it. And never stop editing…
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I just got online and started looking for publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts. I’ve been fortunate to be picked up by three different publisher’s, but this is a slow business and it takes a while to get your name out there.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m more of a paperback reader, so it’s hard for me to switch over to ebooks. I understand the convenience and savings involved, but there’s nothing better than the real thing.
