What inspires you to write?
My experiences as a whistleblower inspired me to write. My Digital Assassins book series was inspired by actual events that happened to me after I became a whistleblower. Using fictional characters, I wanted to expose how government systems, such as the background investigations or the tax administration system, could be misused as a means to target citizens and how policies meant to protect citizen data, such as your social security number or home address, can be disregarded by bad actors and then covered up by management officials.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don't have a specific process. However, for my book series, I started by outlining most of the whistleblower retaliatory events I experienced. After I had these outlined, I just started typing; the stories basically wrote themselves.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I am a self-published author. I feel that this decision was made for me. Prior to deciding to self-publish, I had contacted several publishing companies and literary agents – none were interested in working with me. In some cases, I was told that the company was concerned of retaliation, due to the books subject matter. Therefore, I felt I had two choices, not to publish or to do self-publishing. I decided to self-publish.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I'm hopeful that the industry will be more welcoming to self-published authors and the use of different marketing media and technology. Based on my experience, the industry seemed very selective and not welcoming to new voices. I'm hoping the future will change the experience I had.
