What inspires you to write?
I’m mostly inspired by what goes around me, what I see in the news and what I see in movies. Almost everything gives me an idea, some I decide not to pursue, others I develop.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don’t have a defined writing process yet. I don’t usually outline, but with my latest work, I’ve done some outlining and it seems to work better in terms of putting the story out there. With The Galadima Conspiracy, I didn’t have any idea where the book was actually going as I wrote it, so the story came to me as I went on. I don’t think this is always the best way however. With my new book, Hersassin (working title), I have been able to work on 95% of the story and outline this 95% which makes the writing process so much easier.
In the past, I have started but not finished several works. I believe not having a proper outline is the reason I was unable to finish many of my previous works.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I talk to my characters. I fall in love with some of them and I loathe others. Characters are very important to me. I’m a person’s person and I believe human beings are different and these differences does not have to be a bad thing. I build characters, then I speak to them sometimes apologizing to them about their pending death.
What advice would you give other writers?
Never assume you’re not good enough. That assumption would slow you down to a halt. Write for yourself. If you enjoy your book, it is possible several other people would enjoy it also. Don’t write something that is hot right now because you want to get in with the crowd, create your own heat.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’m a natural entrepreneur. I have worked for myself almost all of my adult life so deciding to self publish was easy. I have been following the self publishing trends since 2007, and sometimes I think God invented self publishing to help me realize my dream of having books out there.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future of book publishing is very exciting. Anybody and everybody can be a publisher and I have witnessed books written by people with no writing skills or talents what so ever, just as I have read great books written by self published authors and read by only a few people.
Book Publishing is open and would only mean more books available for readers.
