What inspires you to write?
I minored in Writing in college and The Third Estate Secrets of the Manor has been swimming in my head for years. Now that Mom’s Taxi is officially closed and my presence is no longer needed in the stands on the soccer or football fields, I have the time to devote to realizing my dream. Since the first day I started to outline the story, the words have flooded the pages like a tsunami, and haven’t stopped. This book is the first in a series.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I love Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Clive Cussler and Robert Ludlum.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm a plotter. It takes me about 2 hours to write a novel. It's only five pages, but the story is complete.
I love the Great Courses. When I decided to write this novel, I down loaded some writing courses to get back in the zone. I came across a course called How to Write Best-Selling Fiction by author James Bell. He talks about writing from sign post to sign post and that's what I do.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I put myself into the minds of my characters and describe what they see, feel, smell, etc. I look around the scene from their perspective, as if I'm there too.
What advice would you give other writers?
A friend of mine at work recently stopped me in the hallway and said, "Thank you." I said for what? She said she was following me on Facebook and watching my journey from afar. She thought, "I can do that too." She also wrote a book and told me I gave her the motivation to not only finish it, but self publish. If I could do it, she could too.
If you think you can or you think you can't, your right. Think you can, and anything is possible.
My advice? The only person you have control over is you. Set a goal, reach for the stars, and enjoy the journey along the way.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
It took me a year to write the novel, two years to edit it, and another two years to figure out how to publish it. I queried agents and independent presses with no luck. I decided to self publish with the help of Outskirts Press to format and distribute.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The possibilities are endless. Self publishing has opened up the opportunity for anyone to realize his or her dreams of becoming a published author. As long as there are stories in authors hearts, there will be a long and beautiful future of book publishing.
