Craig Hurren has amassed many years of experience as an executive in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. A long held passion for thrillers has driven him to aspire to the ranks of his favorite authors, such as: Campbell Armstrong, Clive Cussler, Vince Flynn, Michael Crichton, John Grisham, and others. His clear and concise style, brisk pace, clever plot twists, gritty imagery and crisp action sequences reflect his interest in these masters and his knowledge of medical technology makes his stories relevant and the science highly realistic.
What inspires you to write?
I have a vivid imagination and when ideas pop into my head, I automatically convert them to possible story ideas.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don’t really have a process – I’m more of a spontaneous, seat-of-the-pants writer. I tend to start writing and as the ideas come out, the story expands until I eventually come up with ways to tie all the subplots together into the finished work. I then read and reread it, get friends to read it, then send it off to my editor for advice, and finally, have it proofed.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Not really. I just write them then read them back and ask for opinions.
What advice would you give other writers?
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I did a lot of research on major publishers and the state of the industry before deciding that I would much rather manage my own future than hand the reigns to large conglomerates, only interested in promoting their flagship authors. I also have friends who were signed with big publishers, only to be let down and their books left to flounder in the wilderness, and with no way to regain control of their own work.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It’s anyone’s guess, but if the big boys don’t learn to adapt soon, there will be further, major changes to the face of the industry.
