Carolyn Ward is a Christian Author whose tagline, Writing Animated Literature is aptly deserved. Her writing style takes the reader into the story by bringing it to life in their minds. Many have said it is like seeing a video, when reading her writings.
A gifted speaker, Carolyn holds her audience’s attention as she ministers under the anointing of God, and finishes up with a Word of Knowledge and a Word of Understanding, ministering personally to people as she is directed by God to call them out and speak things He shows her about their past and future.
What inspires you to write?
I am inspired by God when I write. I write about things He teaches me and shows me when I pray. I love to write books and teachings that reflect Who God is and how He meets us in our day to day lives. God is the driving force behind my writing. Writing is a ministry to me and the most important thing to God is people, so, that is the focus of my writing: …God inspired for people…
Tell us about your writing process.
It will depend on what God is wanting to say when I write. That is what I actually ask Him, “Father, What do You want to say to people?” As I sit quietly before Him, He will begin to place things in my mind and I begin to write.
I have never had a writers block. The only thing that I can say would constitute as a writers block was once I wrote a whole chapter, but did not “feel” it was right and could not go forward. I stopped, prayed and the Lord said, “You wrote that chapter. That was from yourself, it was not from Me. Delete it.” I deleted the whole chapter and then was careful to listen to what He had to say and wrote 4 more chapters that night before going to bed.
It was a learning experience for me. I have always been impressed with King David in the Bible. He was said to be a man after God’s own heart. David had a listening heart. He “inquired of the Lord” in everything he did, asking, “Shall I go up?” God said to him, “Go up.” Then he asked, “Will I recover all?” God said, “You will recover all.” So, David went up and fought the Philistines and he recovered all they had taken from him while he was away.
I say that because some people do not think God speaks to us. He does. The Bible says He is the same yesterday, today and forever. If He is the same, then He still speaks to those who are listening and who are seeking Him. That is why I make it a point, no, a habit, to seek Him.
On the technical, so to speak, side, I am an outliner. I write out the chapters first, then I outline the chapters and build around the outlined chapter.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
No, I do not. I sometimes act out what I am writing after I have read it over.
What advice would you give other writers?
I write Christian books, so my advice is seek God, pray about what you are writing about, and involve Him in your writing process. Study and research is very important as well. Research your topic so that you will write knowledgeably. And don’t forget to edit, rewrite, and edit some more before you send it to your editor.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish because that is the route I believe the Lord led me in. In the Christian market, unless you have a mass following, you will not get picked up. Yet, there are many, many wonderful authors out there who are not on television.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the self-publishing venue is viable and has evolved to have a lot of character. Companies are springing up now that support self-published authors because they see there is a great market for these books. I believe that it will surpass mainstream publishing.
