About Carol Van Natta:
Carol Van Natta is an independent science fiction author. Works include the Central Galactic Concordance space opera series—Overload Flux, Minder Rising, and Pico’s Crush—and the retro science fiction comedy, Hooray for Holopticon. She shares her Fort Collins, CO home with a sometime mad scientist and various cats. Any violations of the laws of physics in her books is the fault of the cats, not the mad scientist.

What inspires you to write?
My muse’s home base is science fiction, but it loves visiting romance, space opera, adventure, mystery, paranormal, and suspense. Plots and characters start bubbling up in my brain, and they sound so interesting that I just have to write them down, and then figure out what happens next, which is how they become books.

Tell us about your writing process.
On the scale of pantser, where you sit at the keyboard and start typing, and plotter, where you have everything plotted in a detailed outline, I’m somewhere in the middle, though I lean toward the plotter side of the spectrum. Most of my plots start out as bullet points that get fleshed out into multiple paragraphs. Characters get their own page so I can keep track of the details, such as hair color or their home planet. I have the freedom to deviate from my outline as I discover new things as I write.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
My Central Galactic Concordance series is science fiction romance, which traditional publishers don’t think there’s a market for, so becoming an independent author was the best way to get my books published. It turns out I enjoy working for myself and l love the freedom of writing according to my schedule and going where my muse takes me.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Publishing, particularly fiction and mass-market books, is undergoing a paradigm shift in terms of how content is created, delivered, distributed, and sold. I doubt traditional publishers are going away anytime soon, but I believe they must learn how to deliver content in new ways, and learn to play better with their content providers (i.e., authors), or their market share will erode. As an indie author, I’m fine with it taking them a few more years to figure it out, because it gives me a better chance to build my brand.
