About Candace Riccio Salem:
A native of Connecticut, Candace Riccio Salem currently resides in Israel where she works as a freelance technical writer, editor, and trainer. Her spare time is devoted to reading, writing, folk dancing, and singing in an a cappella ensemble. Candace enjoys spending time with family and friends, and travels with her husband and son whenever possible. Her travels have taken her to destinations throughout the United States, Europe, and Scandinavia.

What inspires you to write?
Despite an avid interest in history, and European history in particular, I didn’t find out that her father, Vincent J. Riccio (1921-2004), had been a Prisoner of War in World War II until she was in high school. Even then, my father declined to elaborate on his experiences. Several years would pass before he agreed to discuss the war with his children. The result was a four-hour video recorded in 1991 in which he recounted his story from enlistment through to repatriation at the end of the war. “Ever the Patriot” was born out of a desire to preserve the legacy of my father and other brave Americans who fought in World War II.

Tell us about your writing process.
“Ever the Patriot” was based on the transcription of a four-hour video recorded in 1991 in which Vincent Riccio recounted his story from enlistment through to repatriation at the end of the war. The material was then organized and edited for clarity and to maintain chronology. I also searched the internet for information on the various units and locations.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
Because this started out as a project intended for family and friends – a memorial of sorts – the self-publishing route was the obvious choice. It enabled me to take advantage of on-demand publishing to order copies as needed, and had the added benefit of making the book available to anyone else interested in World War II.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I expect that self-publishing will continue to flourish.
