What inspires you to write?
I’ve had the good fortune to work in a variety of situations with an eclectic group of co-workers and friends. This has provided me with a number of interesting stories and characters, I saved these stories in a folder and when it was suggested that I should write a book about these stories, the writing process began. The stories and characters in the books are composites of real incidents and people.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Among my favorite author are Michael Connelly, Sheldon Siegel, John Grisham, Joseph Wambaugh.
Tell us about your writing process.
I was told by a successful author, Sheldon Siegel, that if you’re going to write, and write seriously, you need to write daily. You have to approach writing like any other job and be deciplined. It can’t be a hit and miss, when the spirit moves me, situation; it’s a job and you have to work at it.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I like my characters and I do interact with them. Sometimes I’m not sure where they or the story is going. I don’t always know the ending. I frequently ask what would I do? Or if the character is really someone I know, what would they do?
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t give up. It’s going to be a long road, unless you’re incredibly lucky and some literary agent discovers you and pitches your work to a Hollywood Studio or a major publishing house in New York. You’ll have to go to book stores, try and get signings, get someone in the press to write an article about you or your book. Hope for good reviews. Keep writing. Get better.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Painfully. First I tried one of the Internet “we’ll make you a New York Times best selling author, get you a table in all the major book stores, publish your book on all available formats, ,and help you to become a millionaire”. That doesn’t work. They are mostly frauds and they will take your money and deliver nothing. I know! Next came Direct Publishing with Amazon. This is by far the least expensive and easiest tact. But remember you will be one of over one million self published authors on Amazon. Who will notice? Lastly find a legitimate publisher and take it one step at a time and see if they deliver as promised. Look for other authors using that publisher and contact them. Vet the publisher!!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It’s the proverbial Catch 22. You can’t get recognized without an agent. No big publishing house will talk to you when/o an agent. No movie studio will talk to you w/o an agent. And agents will not return your calls or give you any feedback on submitted work. So, you self publish and hope for the best. You find that smaller legitimate publisher and hope for the best. You pay a publisist to get your name out there and hope for the best. You just keep trying, networking, and knocking on doors.
What genres do you write?: True Crime, Thriller, Mystery
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
