About Bobby Hutchinson:
Bobby spends her days reading, writing, cooking and walking. (She’s trying to work up to a jog, but it’s more like a waddle at present.) She lives in the small B.C. town where she was born, after many detours and lots of different addresses. It’s really not true that you can’t come home again. She loves to hear from her readers, both good comments and bad–how else is a writer supposed to learn?
She’s terribly reclusive, and her house is filled with books, even though she uses her Kindle a lot. There just are certain books–like cookbooks–that only work in print.
She recently took up lasagna gardening, which involved covering the entire front lawn with cardboard and then straw, which caused great consternation among the old guys who meet at the A&W every morning. But it’s been a tremendous success, and they’re not suggesting anymore that she be transported to a mental institution.
She loves life, and books, and food–but most of all, she loves readers. Email her and she’ll answer straightaway.

What inspires you to write?
At the moment, history. I’m writing stories about the part of western Canada where my mother grew up, where her parents immigrated to from Norway. Also, I live in a coal mining town in the Rocky Mountains, and the history of the women who came here with their men intrigues me. But always, I write romance in one form or another. Love is the only thing we have to learn here–it takes care of all the other things we see as problems.

Tell us about your writing process.
Oh dear. I’m trying to be more regulated, but its pretty much a losing battle. Some of my most productive writing takes place in front of the TV, not watching the news. I find it easy to spin romance when the world seems to be collapsing around me, go figure.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Once the first few chapters are done, the characters definitely speak, and I answer. I ask them questions, interview them, get to know them in depth. Then it’s easy to see how they’d react to whatever calamity I’ve dreamed up for them.

What advice would you give other writers?
Write. Just write. It’s the hardest and most compelling work you’ll ever do. And the more you do it, the better you become. (I think.)

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self publish after years of selling to major publishers. Self publishing is definitely the way to go.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
E books are here to stay, and on the rise.
