Aspasía S. Bissas’s writing is inspired by pop culture, mythology, history, and magic– as well as a lifelong obsession with vampires. She’s the author of the dark fantasy novels Love Lies Bleeding and Bleeding Heart, and the short stories Tooth & Claw and Blood Magic, set in the same world.
What inspires you to write?
A deep-rooted sense that I have no choice in the matter. Even when I'm not in the mood to write, I still need to write. Aside from that, knowing people enjoy my work and want to read more doesn't hurt!
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Some of my favourite authors include Erin Morgenstern, Ilona Andrews, Charlotte E. English, Freya Pickard, Isabel Allende, and Alison Weir.
Tell us about your writing process.
I do a fair bit of the work, including outlining, mentally. Then when I'm ready, I sit and type until I get it all out. Anything I'm worried I'll forget, including ideas, notes, and character info, gets put into an email and sent to myself.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I let my characters take the lead. Sometimes I think I know what they're going to say or do, but then the characters take it in another (usually better) direction.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write the stories you want to read, rather than worrying about what's trendy at the moment, or what will sell.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I've been involved in various aspects of the publishing industry, and the more I learned about it, the less I saw myself going the traditional publishing route. Everyone is different, though, so figure out what you want as an author, and then go with the type of publishing that works best for you.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I hate to say it, but I think traditional publishing will eventually be open only to celebrities and big name authors; in other words, the people whose books will sell the most. At least, for fiction, anyway.
