What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The story was inspired by conversations held with an acquaintance, and thinking back on times I've driven, prior to his warning. Whereas before, I'd push on though knowing better, now, the first line of the story plays in my head and leads me to the nearest exit. I was just reflecting on times I haven't, and in sort of a mocking voice in my head – admonishing myself: I do know better. I imagined a scenario based on experience and typed the words, and from there the story wrote.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The primary character was imagined from the hubris of knowing better, but acting otherwise. Someone who thinks highly of himself and has been successful in all aspects of his life, but is less talented than lucky. The others were drawn into their roles as the story was conceptualized.
I recall the last thing i was thinking before i stopped, and call my wife, because i don't want her to be concerned. She answers, and I explain, "I'm fine, Lottie." I spare the details and say, only, "Another vehicle left the roadway. They were the only one involved."
"Okay," she answers, and there is hesitance: As if considering whether she can trust me.
I tell her, "I need to see if i can help. I'll – probably – need to make a statement." I explain, "I wanted to let you know I'll be delayed."
Almost in a whisper, my Lottie answers, "Be careful, Ollie."
Then, more loudly calls across the room to tell our daughter, "Ya dad says ya such a brat, he's stayin' out."
I am nearly in tears as I listen to their back and forth, as Trinity comes right back until her mother gives up the pretense and offers her the phone. I am closer yet to tears as i hear her say, "Hi daddy. What happened?"
I tell her, only, "There was an accident. I need to see if everyone's okay."
