When sexy Danny wanders into the coffee shop in Manhattan where Emmy works early one morning to order a latte, and she feels an instant attraction to him. Even though he wears a face mask all the time, Emmy can tell from his dark, sparkling eyes that he’s gorgeous. The connection is mutual, and Danny comes in to flirt the next few mornings, making Emmy hope that one day he’ll actually ask her out.
But when a masked vigilante murders a powerful businessman just around the corner from the coffee shop on a day when Danny doesn’t stop in for a latte, Emmy wonders if she’s been falling for the charms of the subject of the most well-organized manhunt in the history of New York City. A short while after the police stop by to ask Emmy questions about any mysterious customers who have been frequenting the shop recently, Danny comes in—desperate for Emmy’s help.
After admitting to her his involvement in the crime, Danny tells Emmy that his real name is Rocco, and he asks her if she can temporarily provide him with a place to hide.
Fully aware of the danger she may be putting herself in, Emmy agrees to help him, and they begin a passionate affair. Although she disagrees with the crime he’s suspected of committing, she sympathizes with the reasons he provides her for his involvement in the situation.
As the police gather evidence about the identity of the killer, Emmy knows she can’t keep the new man in her life safe forever. She has to decide: go on the run with the man of her dreams, or spend the rest of her life wondering, “What if?”

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As a lover of bad boy romance novels, I had been working on a dark romance about a young woman who is asked by a man who's committed a crime and is the subject of a police manhunt quite a while ago. I had abandoned that manuscript but returned to it in December after seeing the reaction on social media to the events in New York. While this story is not based directly on that event, it inspired me to change a few things in my plot to align more closely with what was resonating so strongly with people around the United States.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Rocco is a "good guy gone bad," or rather, an ethical bad guy, at least in his own mind. We never find out if he's truly guilty or acted alone in the crime he's committed, but he gives Emmy a persuasive justification for his involvement. The grief he has experienced and his need for vengeance have isolated him for a long time before meeting Emmy. Emmy is a young woman like so many I know in New York who is ambitious and capable, but feels trapped by the circumstances of her life. She wants to shine and make a difference in the world, but she just can't catch a break or meet people who she feels any kind of meaningful connection to until Rocco comes along. I always like love stories about people who are perfect for each other but would have never met if it weren't for extraordinary circumstances.
