Let them Pass
This is not being written to simply adhere to the title. This section is a result of the politics of funding and a lot of people wanting to keep their jobs. In all schools children have the right to pass. They have a right to take their tests and complete their assignments. This the reverse of the Miranda rights. As a teacher it is the goal that every student passes the standards of their grade. This sounds like a good idea. It sounds like a great goal.
Let's put this into perspective. The school system has an unwritten policy. Please let them pass. You as a teacher are to create opportunities to ensure the student passes. Of course once again this puts a teacher in a difficult position. Your grade book online is being observed. This is where you put all of your grades. This is where your administrators look at the progress of your students. Too many failing students leads to questions. Why? Why are students failing? As a teacher they assume that you have failed your students without interventions. Keep in mind that this does not take into consideration qualitative measures. It once again assumes that you have classes full of students with no problems. It assumes they come in sit down and do exactly what they are supposed to do.
Once your grade book has been looked at administrators tell you to take measures to make sure students do not fail. This works for students who come in to do work. Many students do not. You are indirectly being told to pass the students without regard to their work. There aren’t many resources to help the students get on level so those off level continually fail. If a 6th grader is on a 3rd grade level the only way to help that student is to get them an I.E.P. An idea would be to teach them on the level they are on and gradually raise them. Another is summer school for all grades. Summer school is only given to the bridge grades 3,6,8. The budget problem prevents summer school access for all grades. You are being asked to pass students without regard to their grades or effort. A teacher can teach but it is unfair to ask a teacher to lie. Students in grades 1,2,4,5 and 7 will automatically pass. They will pass regardless of their scores or grades. Do the students know this? Yes they do. Why should they come to school to learn because it is the right thing to do? They only have to sweat when they are in a bridge grade and not that much they only need the 24 percentile to pass. Many students never sweat it. In truth systematically students have been allowed to be lazy. What pressure has been put on the to do better. It's easier to put the pressure on a teacher. The teacher will listen where the parent and student won't.
