Fifteen-year-old Mariella yearns for a new life. Since the Germans arrived in Rome, food has been scarce, and danger lurks around every corner. On top of that, she’s haunted by a childhood tragedy and weighed down with the responsibility of caring for her siblings. Everything feels impossible. But when she meets Jack, a handsome American soldier with an endearing smile, her future doesn’t seem so dark. She gives him a tour of the famed Colosseum, then takes him to dinner with her family. Despite the language barrier, their connection is undeniable. They share the same scars. The following day, Jack has to ship off to Japan. Neither wants to say goodbye, but they exchange addresses and promise to keep in touch. Over the following years, they try to move on while sharing snippets of their lives via airmail. But when Mariella goes quiet, Jack can’t ignore his feelings any longer.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wrote this book after growing up with these amazing stories of my mother and father’s fateful meeting after World War Two. It amazed me that they only knew each other for one day and one night before saying goodbye and moving on with their lives. What’s really lovely is that they couldn’t forget each other, even when they tried.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
while this is based on a true story, my characters are4 compilations of people I’ve know but or imagined. For example, the characters in Jack’s platoon were made up. I gave a lot of thought to what it might have been like to be so far away from home at such a young age then weaved that sentiment through each character.
