What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Kids! I am surrounded by kids daily and they are absolutely the best inspiration. They are open, honest, willing to try new things, are so ready to learn and have a fun sense of humor. I have three children of my own, have taught elementary aged children for 17 years, teach weekly kids yoga classes and lead junior high youth groups. There is definitely no shortage of inspiration in my day to day life.
When I began to teach kids yoga classes, I was frustrated with the lack of quality kids yoga resources and lesson plans to inspire and engage children. A kids yoga class is very different than an adult yoga class and I wanted to be able to reflect that with Go Go Yoga Kids.
Three boys. That was the total number of participants for the first kids yoga class I ever taught several years ago. I had just completed my training in children’s yoga and was eager to introduce kids to the fun, creativity and benefits of yoga. With my love of kids and yoga already firmly in place, I was sure I could get these three unsuspecting boys on board. I could not find any available plans and ideas for kids yoga so I decided to create my own that were kid-friendly, creative and engaging.
I poured my heart into that first eight-week session. I spent hours researching and creating active yoga themes and games that would get their bodies moving and their interests piqued. We were super heroes, jungle animals, warriors, and Lego enthusiasts. I wrote up informative parent notes for each session so the parents would know our theme and the poses we worked on each week. I included the yoga games we played, illustrations, and tips so they could practice poses at home.
I really wanted to be prepared, and I truly wanted to help these children learn and grow. I wanted to give these boys the best possible introduction to yoga that I could.
At the end of that first eight-week session the boys all signed up for my next session along with an additional twelve kids. This quadrupled my roster! I was ecstatic. I had learned so much that first go-around and was completely hooked on the combination of teaching, yoga, and kids.
Fast forward to present day, after thousands of kids, yoga lessons, and games later, I feel like I truly know what works for introducing and engaging kids through yoga. I am excited to share my accumulation of knowledge so you will be able to empower the kids around you with all the benefits and fun that yoga can provide.
