What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I love the mystery genre. But I also love books that stretch at the boundaries of their given genre. I wanted to take a mystery and use it to explore how we understand our own history. The way that the past continues to haunt the present are fascinating and Ghost Music explores these connections. It’s a fast-paced murder mystery that also pushes at how we make sense of who we are and where we came from.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I love a mystery that includes a detective who has to deal with his or her own limitations and emotional baggage while attempting to solve a crime. That’s certainly the case with Seattle Detective Marcus Brace. Though Marucs would prefer ignoring his past, understanding his own family history becomes key to understanding and solving a series of murders taking place in the present.
About the Author:
Patrick Linder was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in English and American Studies. Awarded a Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies, Linder earned his PhD in American Literature from the University of Washington. Linder is a regular contributor to the online journal Rebelle Society. He lives with his two children in Snoqualmie, Wash., and is currently at work on the follow-up to Ghost Music, again featuring Seattle Detective Marcus Brace.
