What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My inspiration for this book is a legacy to my heritage and my love of cooking and baking. I want to make sure these valuable recipes are passed down and shared.
I was born in Brooklyn, New York into an Italian American family and moved to Long Island when I was five years old. Growing up I always loved visiting with my grandmother Nanny and we spent most of our time in the kitchen. No matter how young you were everyone had a job in Nanny’s kitchen. At the age of five my job was to peel the garlic. These are moments I will always remember. It is where I learned to cook and bake. It was a gift that has provided me a lifetime of joy.
Nanny and Pop-Pop were a team – spending hours in the kitchen preparing their home-cooked, traditional Italian meals. Their backyard garden was the classroom in which I learned how and when to pick vegetables and herbs to use in their recipes. My grandmother, especially, took me under her wing and made sure I knew how to cook the meals I grew up loving. It is from this special place that our family’s tradition and love for great tasting food developed and flourished.
Not to be outdone, my mom Phyllis, was also an excellent cook and helped to instill in me a love of traditional Italian cooking. Her legacy lives on in the food I prepare and enjoy with family and friends today.
This is what my cookbook is all about. It is a culmination of my family's culinary heritage and traditions. This is the food we love to eat and share. These are some of my favorite and most asked for family recipes – some in my family for generations and some authentically-me creations inspired by my heritage and honed by a lifetime of practice and innovation.
So while I’m busy putting together the next volume in this series I encourage you to explore some of our favorite dishes and desserts.
