The Captain’s Crush by Freda Ann
Amelia Marks met her first love, Lewis, while on summer vacation twenty-six years ago, but their future goals kept them apart once they left Bliss Cay.
Now a successful middle-aged widow, and mother to a teenage daughter, her career brings her back to the island—the same place where she met Lewis. After he pulls her over in his police car, she’s stunned when he insists they’ve never met.
Flat out mad that he’s making her feel like a complete stranger, considering the summer they shared, she’s determined to leave her feelings for him in the past. That was before Amelia discovers she’s now his new boss at the Bliss Cay Police Department and his name is not Lewis, it’s Jesse, who shares a striking resemblance to the boy who stole her heart all those years ago.
This mid-life love story is about heartbreak, family bonds, and some unexpected new beginnings with a happily ever after ending.
(All books in this series are wholesome ‘standalone’ beach town love stories with new main characters in each book.)
Excerpt from the Book
Once Lilly and I finish the laundry, I prep the coffee maker for the morning and climb into bed. While staring at the ceiling, images of the six-foot two-inch hunk I spent the afternoon with won’t vacate my thoughts.
“What am I doing? I need to end this before it goes any further. I’m his boss which absolutely goes against department policy. I mean… the man answers to me. Talk about a major conflict with my dream job.” I mutter to the empty room trying to make sense of what’s happening between me and Jesse.
My phone pings with a text message. “Hmm, that’s either my best friend, or the guy who makes my knees go weak.”
Sitting on the side of the bed I start to reach for it when it pings again causing me to flinch. “Geez Amelia, it’s just a message not the boogey man.” Feeling a bit foolish I shake my head.
I pick up the phone and flip it over seeing two separate messages. Taping the screen to make them visible I notice one is from Jenny and the other from Jesse.
Seeing his name alone sends a charge through me. “You’re hopeless and clearly missing some male companionship.” I tell myself while tapping his message first. Biting the side of my bottom lip I read it.
Jesse: I couldn’t let the day end without saying how much I liked seeing you in that yellow and white sundress with your hair pulled back and showing off your well-toned physique. Grinning face with sweat emoji.
Amelia: Why Sergeant Lewis are you flirting with your superior? Hands to the face emoji.
Jesse: No ma’am, I’d never do that, but I don’t see a problem with harmless flirting with a new friend. Shrugging emoji.
Amelia: Well, your new friend appreciates the kind words. Shouldn’t you be asleep by now? You don’t want to be late for work tomorrow, because I’d have to reprimand you.
