Soon-to-be college graduate Seth McCartney finds his love for his favorite October pastime – visiting haunted house attractions – fading. No matter what he does, he can’t recreate the thrills he felt as a kid and teenager. His best friend and fellow horror enthusiast, Peyton Fischer, has already moved on from this tradition and wants to help Seth do the same, but not without one final hurrah.
Over the years, rumors of an extreme haunted house have repeatedly surfaced, yet Seth has never been able to find it. The fabled place has ten stories of unrelenting horror from trap doors, hidden threats, and “actors” that can not only touch you, but remove you from the house. Each level becomes more challenging the higher you go, and only a select few have made it to the exit on the top floor.
Intrigued, Seth and his friends follow a lead to the elusive haunt’s doorstep. It’s everything Seth could’ve imagined to rekindle his passion. A foreboding atmosphere. High-end set pieces. Realistic effects. But there’s a reason this locale has a frightening reputation, especially when its hallways contain the depths of true terror and survival isn’t guaranteed.
Excerpt from the Book
Disbelief overwhelmed her mind as she assessed her dire situation. Lauren lay sprawled across a cold concrete floor in the middle of a lengthy corridor covered in thick shadows. Deep abrasions and tender bruises littered her back. Her arms and legs fared roughly the same, with gaping wounds leaking on the ground.
She stretched forward, her teeth clenched and her muscles blazing. Another inch further, yet not enough to escape the sound of screaming steel behind her. She recalled the source–a pair of curved claws attached to something dreadful–yet her body could only maintain its current pace.
Her eyelids dropped down, shielding her vision from the ominous surroundings. Flickering saucer bulbs observed her from the ceiling, while stainless steel walls contained her to a narrow pathway. She had two options–follow the hallway into impenetrable darkness or take a right a few feet ahead.
Neither option offered comfort. Strangely, Lauren found that by keeping her eyes closed, she could, at least, shift her mind elsewhere. Unfortunately, she couldn’t maintain the distraction. Her friends’ deaths popped in, as did the question: Why did I come here?
Lauren opened her eyes. No improvement. She had to keep moving. Staying stationary assured her death, yet how much more could her busted body muster? Even if she could escape this room, she still had to traverse four more floors.
Tears began to form while she angled herself toward the hallway on her right. As she neared the corner, her emotions rolled from her chest and out her eyes. Her face dropped to the floor, her ducts bursting.
This is how it all ends. All those daydreams of a life beyond college would never come to pass. Competing for the national championship on her track and field team? Gone. Graduation? Won’t make it. Marriage? Kids? Exotic vacations? All gone. This is how her life concludes–in a murderous funhouse.
