About the Book
Set in the early 1990s against the backdrop of Yugoslavia’s disintegration, NIKOLA is the story of love, sacrifice and the tragic end of an ideal depicted in the lives of two childhood friends and lovers, Nikola and Lana, and their fight for survival in Bosnia’s whirlwind of war.
Born in the United States, but raised in Yugoslavia after his parents’ divorce, Nikola, now a U.S. serviceman, arrives in Sarajevo, the capital of the Bosnia and Hercegovina province. The Yugoslav Federation is falling apart, and the civil war is about to break out. Sarajevo reminds Nikola of his youth and his first love, Lana. He never got over the breakup, which occurred years ago as a result of his decision to move back to America. After an accidental encounter in a club, Nikola and Lana rekindle the love they once shared. But in the city threatened by war, their paths are destined to diverge again.
Drawn into the Bosnia’s bloody multiethnic conflict, Nikola experiences, firsthand, the brutality and horrors of war. In her fight for survival, Lana, too, encounters one misfortune after another. When Nikola and Lana reunite in America three years later, their feelings for each other are stronger than ever. But times of hardship are not over for the two star-crossed lovers, already haunted by dark memories of loss and human suffering.
