The community center smelled like burnt coffee and industrial disinfectant. Maya sat in the circle of folding chairs, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, watching the other women arrive for the “Adult Children of Difficult Parents” support group. She’d found it online after three sleepless nights following rejection email #848, desperate enough to try something she’d avoided for years.
“Welcome, everyone,” said Janet, the facilitator, a woman in her forties with kind eyes and graying temples. “Let’s start by having our newcomer introduce herself. Maya, would you like to share what brought you here?”
Maya’s voice came out too loud again, echoing slightly in the small room. She cleared her throat and tried to modulate. “I’m Maya. I’m fifty-five, and I’m just starting to understand that my childhood wasn’t… normal.”
