Gabe leaned against the door frame and slowly cocked his head up to her. “I feel like crud,” he finally said. “I was up and down all night crapping my brains out. I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“No, Anna needed to eat.”
Rocky barked.
“Shh,” Lacy shushed Rocky this time, and the dog pressed against Lacy’s legs.
“I already called into work. I must have whatever’s going around.”
“You don’t think it’s an infection, do you?” Lacy asked, rocking Anna, instinctually moving the baby slightly away. Gabe got an injury on his hand, and brushed off Lacy’s initial concerns over it, sure that a little warm water and a bandage would be enough.
Rocky let out a low growl.
Gabe cleared his throat of something phlegmy. “It feels like the flu.” Rocky barked at Gabe and he snapped, “Rocky, no barking!” then winced at the exertion, causing a sharp pain behind his eyes.
“I’ll take him outside.” Lacy led Rocky back with his collar.
“I’m going to lie down,” Gabe called back.
Anna started to cry with an empty bottle in her mouth.
One thing at a time, guys! Lacy thought.
Rocky finally stopped barking as they reached the back door, all too happy to get away from the house. He barked once at the house and waited expectantly for Lacy to step out with him. He barked again at the house, towards their bedroom, and then looked expectantly again at Lacy.
“What’s gotten into you, bud?” Lacy mumbled. It was like he wanted to get away from the house.
