What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was inspired to create this book after my own lack of focus, over-active thoughts, and anxiety issues. I've been heavily into the self-help/personal development genre since high school and wanted to put the solutions I've discovered over the years into a concise book to help others. I still remember all the times I read a personal development book and had an a-ha moment about my life and I hope to inspire others with information they may have never knew or read before.
How are you feeling? What’s going on in that head of yours? How’s your focus on the things that matter to you?
It’s difficult to develop the best possible version of yourself without first investigating what’s happening between your ears. Our brains are constantly processing what we notice, and our focus helps facilitate this action.
First things first, there’s going to be quite a few questions in this book directed toward the almighty you, because the most important person you should be concerned with in this life is yourself. Not in a selfish way, but with a self-awareness that reminds you that we can’t live our best lives without knowing ourselves deeply. With that knowledge, we know what we focus our concentration on is creating our day-to-day reality.
In school, we grow up learning from our school’s educational curriculum, but did you ever have any classes on how to concentrate? If you did, you’re one of the lucky few. If you’re anything like me, I received a wonderful education but very little intel about my mind and how it works. We’re told we need to focus on our studies if we want to achieve anything in life, but I always had trouble concentrating on one thing at a time. If we’re never taught how to do something in the first place, it’s difficult to practice, let alone become good at it.
The inability to focus comes in many forms and everyone’s attention span is different. There are some with legitimate psychological and brain-related disorders that make it difficult to focus on even simple tasks. Others struggle to concentrate on what’s important to them. They know the goal they want to accomplish yet their efforts say otherwise. We know who we want to be and what it takes to get there, but it’s a slow crawl and seems impossible for us to pinpoint why we’re resisting.
If you’re beginning to feel dragged down by the daily grind of life, this is a message that should put things into perspective; a change needs to take place. Are you spending your time wisely? Do you feel like you’re focusing on the wrong things? Or maybe when you’re trying to focus, you fall short on concentration because there’s higher priority tasks to finish. Perhaps you’re looking to better control the incessant noise upstairs and would like clarity on how to do so. Maybe you have a looming project deadline but can’t seem to focus for a damn second without wanting to check Instagram or eat a snack. The more you try to encourage yourself, the more things move in the opposite direction.
In society today, we all want the quick fix—the fastest and most convenient way to accomplish not only our mundane tasks but our more complex goals and dreams as well. In turn, these fixes will make our lives easier, and once that to-do list is squared away and our dreams are met, we’ll finally be happy! Peace will finally prevail on earth! Right?
Well, not quite. Technology has helped afford us so many luxuries; from ordering dinner at the push of a button to the simplicity of turning on a light switch to brighten up a darkened room. After all, we’re living in the most technologically advanced time period thus far, but with a slew of mental disorders on the rise, technology might actually be hurting more than helping. People are living as comfortably as this species has ever lived and accomplishing more than they’ve ever dared to dream, yet why are most people still unhappy and unable to focus?
This is something I’ve been interested in discovering because I have a lot of personal stake in this subject of focus, as do you. You only get one life, so why not attempt to focus on exactly what you’d like to accomplish and be able to do so with conscious intention? The modern millennial philosophers claim that “you only live once,” or “YOLO,” but in reality you only die once, and you live your life every day.
