Nurse Lora Spencer is stabbed to death by an unknown assailant during the morning rush hour on Wellington’s Lambton Quay. A freelance journalist, Adam Adair, finds himself holding the dying woman in his arms. Haunted by the experience, Adair decides to investigate. Lora’s relatives and associates can only tell him so much and, like her ex-boyfriend, may have something to hide. The task isn’t helped by the struggle Adair is having with his feelings for housemate Hailey Wilson, also a nurse at Wellington Hospital.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to try the mystery genre after publishing 11 low-key thrillers. The idea of contrasting the lifestyles of criminals and middle-class also appealed to me, as did the idea of criminal child swap at birth.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I wanted a freelance journalist who could exploit his situation of being involved in the murder. I wanted him to fall for a very nice girl who seemed unobtainable at first. I wanted a villain, a criminal, living in slum conditions. I wanted a contrasting wealthy couple, with a child, who had something to hide. I wanted a murder victim who had flaws. I filled out a character development sheet for each.
